New Acquisitions: materials related to Christianity, translation of the Bible, and Iha Fuyu

The Okinawa Collection is pleased to announce that it received the materials related to missionaries, the Bible with Ryukyuan translation, and the Bible translated by Iha Fuyū from a donor in Okinawa.

Among the Hawley Collection, the Okinawa Collection holds a hanging scroll of the “rubbing monument to Bettelheim.”

The images of the scroll is available at http://manwe.lib.u-ryukyu.ac.jp/d-archive/s/list?col=116. The scroll can be found by searching with the Hawley number "902" or the keyword “聖書.”

According to the University of the Ryukyus Library, 3 individuals translated the Bible in the Ryukyuan language. Those three people are, B.J. Bettelheim, Iha Fuyu, and Shin'ichi Arakaki.
