Caveat in using Asahi Kikuzo II Visual

UH Mānoa subscribes to a useful database called "Asahi Kikuzo II Visual." (朝日新聞記事データベース、聞蔵II)

Kikuzo II (Asahi shinbun) / 聞蔵II

The use of this database is limited to the UH Mānoa faculty, staff, and students. You can access it from the public terminals on campus.

Here is some historical information you need to know before you search news articles in this database.

In 1879 the Asahi shinbun started its publication in Osaka. Almost 10 years later (in 1888), the Tokyo Asahi shinbun started its publication. Because the Tokyo Asahi shinbun came to exist, the original Asahi shinbun called itself as the Osaka Asahi shinbun in 1889.

About 2000 articles in the Osaka Asahi shinbun is indexed for keyword search from its first edition January 25, 1879 to July 10, 1888 until the Tokyo Asahi shinbun was published in 1888.

Only the Tokyo Asahi shinbun and Tokyo edition are indexed for keyword search in Asahi Kikuzo II.

Thus, if you search a certain word, you might not find any results. If so, please keep it in mind that not all of the Osaka Asahi shinbun articles are indexed (for retrieval).
