The Plot of The Tale of Genji and the Emperor System
The Tale of Genji, a story of Heian court life written at the beginning of the 11th century, lies at the center of the premodern Japanese literary canon. Dr. Yuichiro Imanishi 今西祐一郎博士, Director-General of the National Institute of Japanese Literature, is a respected scholar of the work. He will help unravel its secrets and share his theories on how this tale, which depicts imperial succession with such disrespect, came to be written.
