HWST 362: Pana Oʻahu

This guide was created to help students in HWST 362: Pana Oʻahu. The guide focuses on Māhele land records.

Parts of a (Land Commission Award) LCA:

  1. Helu / LCA Number
  2. Awardee
  3. Location of LCA
  4. Description and location of parcel
  5. Survey of parcel
  6. Total land size of LCA
  7. Surveyor
  8. Sketches of parcels listed in LCA (roughly proportional to size of actual parcels)
  9. Cost of LCA and survey
  10. Commissioners
  11. Date and location LCA was awarded

1. On the AVA Konohiki website, go to the "LCA Index & Search" tab, then select "LCA Advanced Search" from the drop down menu.

2. Click on Advanced Search.

3. Select only the "AVAKONOHIKI- LCA (Land Commission Awards)" collection. Then click "Save."

4. Select a field to search in (e.g. Island) and enter a search term (e.g. Oahu).

5. Add more rows to add more context to your search. When youʻre finished building your search parameters, click "Search."

6. On the left you'll see filters (e.g. Ahupuaa) to specify and narrow your search. Use those if helpful.

1. The LCA collection is full-text searchable

  • AVA Konohiki is the only database that provides free digital access to full-text transcriptions of the LCAs.
  • E makaʻala! There are some errors with data entry. If you can't find something, try a different type of search.

2. Start with the indices if you want to get a feel for how many LCAs were awarded in a particular location, or to a particular person.

  • See Index Volume 3 available at AVA Konohiki
  • Alphabetical index of awards by awardees is on Pages 1-341. Awardees' last names are arranged by island, then moku.
  • Alphabetical index of awards by location is on Pages 342-773. Locations are arranged alphabetically by island, then moku (if applicable), from Hāmākua, Hawaiʻi to the island of Niʻihau.

3. Handwriting is fun to read :)

  • The claimant here is "John Voss," not "John Vofs." "Ss" (like in "possession" or "class") was written as shown below.
