HWST 362: Pana Oʻahu

This guide was created to help students in HWST 362: Pana Oʻahu. The guide focuses on Māhele land records.

Parts of a Testimony:

  1. Helu / LCA Number
  2. Awardee
  3. Carry-over / cross-listing information
  4. Name of testifier
  5. Testimony for specific parcel

1. On the AVA Konohiki website, go to the "Hawaiʻi Land Documents" tab and select "Foreign Testimonies" from the drop down menu. Then select "FT Advanced Search" from the next drop down menu.

2. Click on Advanced Search.

3. Select only the "AVAKONOHIKI - FT, NT (Foreign Testimonies, Native Testimonies)" collection. Then click "Save."

4. Select a field to search in.

5. Enter your search terms (e.g. Kanewai) then click "Search."

6. On the left you'll see filters (e.g. LCA Awardee Name(s)) to specify and narrow your search. Use those if helpful.

1. The Foreign and Native Testimonies are *not* full-text searchable

  • Unlike the LCA collection, the Foreign and Native Testimonies were't transcribed by AVA Konohiki, Instead, AVA Konohiki noted keywords (e.g. inoa, wahi pana, mea kanu) that appeared in the testimonies.
  • However, transcriptions and translations for the Native Testimonies only are full-text searchable in the AVA Konohiki database.

2. Oftentimes, FTs and NTs contain similar, if not exactly the same, content.

  • The Foreign Testimonies are often English translations of the Native Testimonies that are ma ka ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi.
  • For an example of this, see the "Case Study: LCA 1930" page to the left.
