HWST 341 - Mo'okū'auhau: Hawaiian Genealogies: Cemetery Directories

Background Information

Cemeteries are a great place to do genealogy, especially if you need to find your kūpunaʻs birth and death date. Inscriptions on graves will generally include: birth and death dates, relationship, kind of tombstone, other inscription information.

The Research Process

Getting Started - How do I find Cemetery Directories?
UH Mānoaʻs Hawaiian Collection has all the directories available in print and some online. You will need to click the directory you want (see next column), then submit a request to "Get This Item". Once you submit that request, the directory will be waiting for you in the Hawaiian Collection at the Circulation Counter. If you cannot get to the Hawaiian Collection, you can begin you search using this website, Tombstone Transcription Project, Hawaii. It has transcriptions from many cemeteries on all islands. Note: This website is not comprehensive so you will need to look at the print directories.
