Use this guide to get started using the desktop version of EndNote.

Simple Step-By-Step

Adding a Citation with the Insert Citation Command: (MS Word 2010)

1. In your Word Document, select the EndNote X6 tab

2. Click on the Go To EndNote button

3. Select the reference you want to add (use the CTRL key to select more than one)

4. Go back to your Word Document

5. Place your cursor where you want to insert the reference

6. Click lower half of the Insert Citation button and select Insert Selected Citation(s)

*NOTE: The EndNote Library you're using must also be open

Adding Citations with Insert Citation Command

There are two ways to add in-text citations to your paper with EndNote - both methods do the same thing in the end, but the one you use is up to you. This tutorial by EndNote shows you how to use the "Insert Citation" command in MS Word 2007.

To use the Insert Citation command in older versions of MS Word, watch this tutorial or follow these steps:

1. In your Word document, select Tools → EndNote X5 → Go To EndNote

2. Select the reference you want to add (use the CTRL key to select more than one)

3. Click the blue W icon in the library toolbar

4. Select Tools → EndNote X5 → Insert Selected Citation(s)
