There are a number of tricks you can use to enhance your Web of Science searches.

Knowing how to use these techniques - on their own and together - will help you narrow your search when you have too many irrelevant results as well as broaden your search when your search when it's too limited.

Quick Tips

When searching in Web of Science, here are a few things to note:

Capitalization does not matter:

  • MRI works the same as mri or Mri.

Apostrophes are searched as spaces:

  • to be sure you're getting all relevant results, search for (Hodgkin's OR Hodgkins)

Use the hyphen when searching for words that are often hypenated:

  • cross-cultural will return results with cross-cultural and cross cultural
