About the agency
The Bureau of Labor was established within the Department of the Interior in 1884. The Cabinet-level Department of Commerce and Labor was established in 1903. In 1913, the Department of Labor was established as a separated Cabinet-level agency. Its mission is "To foster, promote, and develop the welfare of the wage earners, job seekers, and retirees of the United States; improve working conditions; advance opportunities for profitable employment; and assure work-related benefits and rights."
