American Studies Research Guide

Use this guide to find articles, books, reference sources and more for research in American Studies. The guide focuses on online resources, which can be accessed either within the library or remotely.

In addition to online resources, selected print titles are included. The guide lists basic resources and does not contain all of the materials in the library useful for historical research. For additional resources consult other relevant subject guides, the Hawaii Voyager Library Catalog, or the librarian for American Studies, David Beales.

American Studies Collections in the UHM Libraries

Depending on your research, you may need to use one or more of the collections in the UHM Library.

The UHM collections contain over 307,000 books and over 2,000 periodicals and other serials supporting interests in history, as well as thousands of other books and journals in related fields.

American Studies Collection in UHM Libraries

The University of Hawaii at Manoa's American Studies collection is interdisciplinary in nature, comprising over 80,000 volumes and many serials drawn from American national and local history, economics, political science, and literature. Call number areas that include materials relevant to American Studies include:

E 151+ | United States History

F 1-975 | United States State and Local History

HC 95-109 | United States Economic History

JK | Political Science, United States

PS | Literature, United States

While the majority of American Studies materials are located on the first floor (reference) and the second floor (circulating materials and periodicals), the Asian and Hawaii/Pacific collections on the fourth and fifth floors contain many useful materials as well; ex. U.S. relations with Japan, Hawaii statehood, etc.
