Chinese Studies -- Exploring Dunhuang: A Bibliographic Guide to the UHM Library Collection: Dunhuang Art

A bibliography that primarily highlights the library's extensive resources on Dunhuang art and manuscripts, while also covering other aspects of Dunhuang studies related to the area.

Introduction

The design, materials, traditions, techniques, spirit, and impression of the caves, wall paintings, painted sculptures, and movable cultural relics distinctly exhibit the characteristics of their respective periods, representing a continuum of Buddhist artistic achievement from the 4th to the 14th centuries in Northwestern China. For a millennium, the Mogao Caves played a crucial role in artistic exchanges between China, Central Asia, and India. The artworks display a dynamic fusion of artistic styles from the Han Chinese, Indian, and Gandharan traditions, further enriched by influences from Central Asian and other Chinese ethnic groups.

A playlist of 25 videos. It explores the significance of the Mogao Grottoes and highlights the more than 25 years of collaboration between the Getty Conservation Institute and the Dunhuang Academy to protect and conserve this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
