History 296 - WWII & Making of Modern Asia/Pacific: South Asia
South Asia and the countries in the region -- Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka -- have long and complex histories of conquest, colonization, dislocation of large communities of people into, out of, and across South Asia as a result of political upheavals related to war and various forms of unrest; for economic reasons related to development and labor in British colonies of Kenya, Fiji, & Trinidad, to name a few; and social upheavals related to various forms of communal violence and displacement of communities.
For the purpose of this course, a guide to selected resources has been created to focus on the making of modern India following independence and World War II through an introduction to the architects of the modern nation state.
