The Social Security Administration (SSA) administers social security benefits. It was established as the Social Security Board in 1935. In 1939, it was placed under the Federal Security Agency (FSA). In 1946, its name was changed to SSA. In 1953, when FSA was abolished, SSA became part of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. In 1994, SSA became an independent agency.
