The Social Security Administration (SSA) administers social security benefits. It was established as the Social Security Board in 1935. In 1939, it was placed under the Federal Security Agency (FSA). In 1946, its name was changed to SSA. In 1953, when FSA was abolished, SSA became part of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. In 1994, SSA became an independent agency.

Government Documents provides access to an extensive collection of SSA publications, including the following categories:

  • Handbooks, manuals, and guides
  • Treaties
  • Congressional hearings, reports, and documents about social security
  • Legislative histories of social security laws
  • Statistical publications

The past several years of most publications are available online. Ask us about older publications.

The U.S. Social Security Death Index, 1935-2014 is available through Family Search and in Ancestry.com, which is available in many public libraries including the Hawai‘i State Public Library System. It lists deaths reported to the SSA.
