HWST 601: Indigenous Research Methodologies

AlterNative is dedicated to the analysis and dissemination of native indigenous knowledge that uniquely belongs to cultural, traditional, tribal and aboriginal peoples as well as first-nations, from around the world. AlterNative spans themes of origins, place, peoples, community, culture, traditional and oral history, heritage, colonialism, power, intervention, development and self-determination. Journal began in 2005.

With editorial offices at the University of Hawai'i Center for Pacific Island Studies, The Contemporary Pacific covers a wide range of disciplines with the aim of providing comprehensive coverage of contemporary developments in the entire Pacific Islands region, including Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. It features refereed, readable articles that examine social, economic, political, ecological, and cultural topics, along with political reviews, book reviews, resource reviews, and a dialogue section of letters and short items. The Hawaiian Journal of History, first published in 1967, is an annual scholarly journal devoted to original articles on the history of Hawai‘i, Polynesia, and the Pacific area. Each issue includes articles on a variety of subjects; illustrations; book reviews; notes and queries; and a bibliography of Hawaii-related titles of historical interest. Full-text access to vols. 1-42 (1967-2008).

The Journal of Pacific History is a refereed international journal serving historians, prehistorians, anthropologists and others interested in the study of mankind in the Pacific Islands (including Hawaii and New Guinea), and is concerned generally with political, economic, religious and cultural factors affecting human presence there. Full-Text access is available from 1993, but there is an 18-month embargo.

MAI Journal is an open access journal that publishes multidisciplinary, peer-reviewed articles that critically analyse and address indigenous and Pacific issues in the context of Aotearoa New Zealand. MAI aims to publish scholarly articles that substantively engage with intellectual indigenous scholarship. MAI Journal publishes two issues per year, the first in May and the second in December. American Indian Quarterly is a peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary journal of the anthropology, history, literatures, religions, and arts of Native Americans. Wide-ranging in its coverage of issues and topics, AIQ is devoted to charting and inciting debate about the latest developments in method and theory. Full text is available from EBSCOhost from 1990 - present, 4 issues are printed per year.

As a general focus, the journal publishes anthropological, historical, sociological, political, legal, educational and cultural issues affecting First Nations people. Although the majority of articles deal with Indigenous peoples in Canada, it also publishes articles dealing with Indigenous peoples world-wide. The journal publishes 2 issues per year, and full text coverage is available from ProQuest since 2005.

Decolonization: Indigeneity, Education & Society is an undisciplinary, peer-reviewed, online Open Access journal committed to supporting and advancing decolonization scholarship, practice, and activism within and, more importantly, beyond and against, the academy. Full Text access is available from 2012.

IIPJ is a peer-reviewed, policy-relevant research journal addressing issues pertaining to Indigenous peoples throughout the world. An editorial and advisory board made up of 31 experts in Indigenous issues leads this peer-reviewed journal. Regionally, they represent North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. The journal publishes 4 issues a year, and Full Text access is available from 2010 via ProQuest.

The International Journal of Critical Indigenous Studies disseminates scholarship across the Humanities, Social Sciences, Health Sciences, Law and Education in the field of Indigenous Studies. Indigenous scholars from around the world share common experiences of colonization. The journal publishes 2 issues per year, and full text access is available from 2008.

Previously titled the Journal of Aboriginal Health, The International Journal of Indigenous Health (IJIH) was established to advance knowledge and understanding to improve Indigenous health. IJIH is peer-reviewed, online, and open-access. Full Text access is available from 2004 via ProQuest.

The Journal of the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association (based at the University of Minnesota) participates in the process of framing, deploying, and otherwise critically challenging the local and global contours of Indigenous studies. The journal publishes 2 issues per year, and Full Text is available from 2014.
