Digital Humanities?

Digital humanities (DH), also known as digital scholarship, is an interdisciplinary research field and set of methodologies situated at the intersections of humanistic inquiry and digital technologies. This can be anything from text mining newspapers, creating a database, developing a podcast, and much more.

Related areas of scholarship include public history, computational humanities, and cultural analytics.

Defining Digital Humanities by Melissa Terras (Editor); Julianne Nyhan (Editor); Edward Vanhoutte (Editor) Digital Humanities is becoming an increasingly popular focus of academic endeavour. There are now hundreds of Digital Humanities centres worldwide and the subject is taught at both postgraduate and undergraduate level. Yet the term 'Digital Humanities' is much debated. This reader brings together, for the first time, in one core volume the essential readings that have emerged in Digital Humanities. We provide a historical overview of how the term 'Humanities Computing' developed into the term 'Digital Humanities', and highlight core readings which explore the meaning, scope, and implementation of the field. To contextualize and frame each included reading, the editors and authors provide a commentary on the original piece. There is also an annotated bibliography of other material not included in the text to provide an essential list of reading in the discipline. This text will be required reading for scholars and students who want to discover the history of Digital Humanities through its core writings, and for those who wish to understand the many possibilities that exist when trying to define Digital Humanities.

Debates in the Digital Humanities by Matthew K. Gold (Editor) Encompassing new technologies, research methods, and opportunities for collaborative scholarship and open-source peer review, as well as innovative ways of sharing knowledge and teaching, the digital humanities promises to transform the liberal arts--and perhaps the university itself. Indeed, at a time when many academic institutions are facing austerity budgets, digital humanities programs have been able to hire new faculty, establish new centers and initiatives, and attract multimillion-dollar grants. Clearly the digital humanities has reached a significant moment in its brief history. But what sort of moment is it? Debates in the Digital Humanities brings together leading figures in the field to explore its theories, methods, and practices and to clarify its multiple possibilities and tensions. From defining what a digital humanist is and determining whether the field has (or needs) theoretical grounding, to discussions of coding as scholarship and trends in data-driven research, this cutting-edge volume delineates the current state of the digital humanities and envisions potential futures and challenges. At the same time, several essays aim pointed critiques at the field for its lack of attention to race, gender, class, and sexuality; the inadequate level of diversity among its practitioners; its absence of political commitment; and its preference for research over teaching. Together, the essays in Debates in the Digital Humanities--which will be published both as a printed book and later as an ongoing, open-access website--suggest that the digital humanities is uniquely positioned to contribute to the revival of the humanities and academic life. Global Debates in the Digital Humanities by Domenico Fiormonte (Editor); Sukanta Chaudhuri (Editor); Paola Ricaurte (Editor) A necessary volume of essays working to decolonize the digital humanities   Often conceived of as an all-inclusive "big tent," digital humanities has in fact been troubled by a lack of perspectives beyond Westernized and Anglophone contexts and assumptions.
