Monographs, Serials & Media

In libraries, monographs are considered to be materials published one time on a particular topic. They are usually detailed studies, one-time reports, or books. Serials are considered to be materials published periodically. They are usually newspapers, magazines, journals, newsletters, and reports that are published in an ongoing manner like semi-weekly, quarterly, annual, biennial, etc. Media is used for materials that are in audio/visual and computer formats, like cassette tapes, CDS, DVDs, Blu-Ray and streaming videos.

UHM Library's OneSearch (Advanced Search)*
Looks for materials on our library shelves, those held at other UH campuses, and in the many library databases that we may or may not subscribe to. Results include scholarly, popular, and grey literature such as technical reports and government documents as well as commercially available media, some news articles and more.
Papakilo Database - Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA)
Search multiple collections pertaining to historically, culturally, and socially significant places, events, issues and documents in Hawai'i’s history.
Ulukau (Advanced Search)
Strong collection of very useful Hawaiian-related books and journals from the 1800s to today on Hawaiian history, culture, language, and issues. Also includes many specialized collections important to Hawaiian research.
ScholarSpace
Collection of scholarship, including theses and dissertations, created by UHM students, faculty, and staff. Items are findable by department, title, author, and are full-text searchable.
eVols
Collection of scholarship and important research materials published by organizations and individuals not part of UHM. Items are findable by communities, title, author, and are full-text searchable.
Google Books
Full-text search of many digitized books and periodicals. Titles under copyright are given a limited preview and those in the public domain are freely available. Use this search to find specific references to your topic. Note: titles with a limited preview may be available online or in print via OneSearch.
HathiTrust Digital Library
Digitized collections from some major research libraries. Public domain items are freely available while copyrighted items can only be keyword searched.

Dissertations & Theses
Over 750,000 doctoral and selected master's theses from now to 1997 are available for PDF download. Includes citations of titles from more than 1,000 graduate schools and universities dating back to 1861.
