    Basics of Searching

    • Hawaii Voyager and the journal literature databases can all be searched using keywords that describe your topic, such as behavior AND honeybees

    • Search by keyword phrases by enclosing the phrases in quotes, example: "analytical chemistry" keyword search

Using Index terms (or metadata) to refine your search

      • You can find terms to refine your search by clicking on a record and identifying relevant subject headings that are attached to the record.

        Combining Searches or Terms

      • You can use Boolean logic (AND, OR, ANDNOT) to increase or decrease the number of records you will retrieve in a search.

      • Use truncation symbols to easily broaden a search on a particular term, such as ? in Hawaii Voyager, or *in many of the databases. Some databases will automatically stem a search term so that truncation symbols are unnecessary.

    • Look for ways to filter your searches such as using Journal Title Begins With to search for a particular journal in Hawaii Voyager or using Title Begins With to search, a book title.

What if the book isn't in the library?

    • If the book is checked out use the Get Item link to recall the book to the library so that you can check it out.

    • If the book is held by another library in the UH system use the Get Item link to request the book from another UH System library.

    • If the book isn't in Hawaii Voyager, request the book through Interlibrary Loan at, that library office will usually be able to get the book for you from another library.
