Ethnic Studies 320 - Hawaiʻi & the Pacific: Videos

The website Breadfruit Educational Resources includes a variety of short documentary films created by Dr. Lola Quan-Bautista, who is a faculty member in Pacific Islands Studies. These films include:

• Crossing Spaces (about three Micronesian women who build new lives in Hawai'i)
• Math  Is Everywhere (which features Chuukese educators discussing concepts related to ethnomathematics)
• Voices of Women in Micronesia (in which educators Delihna Ehmes and Alice Ehmes answer the question "What is the ideal Micronesian woman?")
• Noahno & Lih Pingelap (in which Pingelapese poet Resida Keller discusses the questions “where is my place?” and “what is my role?”)
• Learning about Skirts from Micronesia: A Lesson with Aunty Yoana (about "urohs," or Pohnpeian skirts)
• Chimako’s Keynote Speech (The opening-day speech of the 9th Annual Marshallese Education Day, in which Chimako Anitok discusses racism and discrimination faced by many Micronesians living abroad.)
• Atan Bithen del Carmen (in which Señora Carmen Camacho Rojas sings “Atan Bithen del Carmen,” a Chamorro-language song in honor of her patron saint, Our Lady of Mount Carmel.)

Dr. Quan-Bautista's documentary film Breadfruit and Open Spaces is also available for streaming through the library's subscription to Ethnographic Videos Online (click on the film title for a link to the streaming version).

The Pacific Way is a film series produced by the Pacific Community (SPC, formerly the South Pacific Commission) starting in 1996. These episodes aired on TV stations throughout Oceania. Early episodes included segments such as music videos, host chit-chat, and letters from viewers, which was discontinued in later episodes. As the SPC is a regional intergovernmental technical support agency, many of the videos are about development projects in the region.
