Streaming Music: Alexander Street Press

A guide to locating streaming audio resources at UH-Manoa

What's in the Alexander Street Press family of sound and video archives?

University of Hawaii has access to three main streaming music collections through Alexander Street Press (listed below).
Many recordings include the original liner notes, and some composer biographies are linked from the Garland Encyclopedia of World Music.

How do I get to ASP Music Online?

Alexander Street

You can access Alexander Street Press by clicking on the graphic or you can reach the individual archives (Classical Music Library or Contemporary World Music) by clicking on the links found on the Music Subject Guide Libguides.

Note: If you are off campus or using your personal computer, you will need to first log in using your UH username and password.

Searching tips

  • If you get more search results than you want, click on "Refine your search" or check out the "Filter results by" on right side of screen.
  • As search results usually come up by album, it's helpful to click the "Show all tracks" button.
  • In the "Browse Albums" function, you can click on the top of the column to sort by title, performer, label, genre, or recording date.
  • Try browsing by cultural groups or song titles!

Sending music to your mobile device

You can send tracks, albums, or playlists to your mobile device by creating a shortlink. After clicking on the  icon (labeled send to mobile), you can save the shortlink in one of three ways:

  • Sending a text message or email to your phone
  • Copying the shortlink from the browser
  • Scanning a QR code with your smartphone camera (requires a QR app)

Shortlinks are only active for 48 hours after their creation.

Creating playlists

After registering for a personal user account, you can create personal or public playlists. Simply click on the "Sign In" link on the upper right corner (below the search bar) and follow the instructions to register. Then, select the "Playlists" tab and click "Create a Playlist" on the right hand side of the screen.

If you decide to create a public playlist for a course, follow these guidelines:

  • Include your name and the course title in the playlist name.
  • When prompted "Who can see this Playlist," select "Everyone at my institution."
  • You can add a password, if needed.

For further instructions, the main Alexander Street webpage includes links to YouTube tutorials, including a video on creating playlists.
