The Japan Collection Library Travel Award is made possible by anonymous donors and matching funds from the UHM Center for Japanese Studies. The UHM Library will award a grant on a competitive basis to defray travel expenses for faculty and graduate-level students of Japanese studies/East Asian studies at U.S. institutions outside of Hawaii, who will use materials onsite at the UHM Library’s Japan Collection.
After arrival at UHM, payment of the travel award amount will be processed with the UH Disbursing Office. This award is considered taxable income by the IRS and as required by law, the Disbursing Office will report this to the IRS.
During their stay, awardees are expected to deliver brief presentations on their ongoing research to the UH community, as an opportunity for mutual exchange and learning, if scheduling allows. These presentations are not required to cover what they newly learned during the awarded visit.
While the exact timing is flexible, awardees commonly plan their visits to UH in May or June.
