 Prof. Takahiro Sasaki of Keio University will be discussing the development of Japanese prints and books, the different formats, the relationship between the book bindings and the contents, and how modern Japanese manga evolved.  Please join the public lecture and/or two hands-on seminars on February 22-24, 2016 at the UHM Hamilton Library.

Prof. Sasaki will deliver his public lecture using an English interpreter for people with an interest in Japanese books and history. The focus will cover from early illustrated books to Manga. This public lecture is designed to inspire interest across a diverse audience on Japanese prints, books, and the publishing culture in Japan.

The first seminar on February 22, 2016, will cover the history of Japanese printing and books with respect to various methods of book binding. The targeted audience for this session would include Japanese studies students, librarians working with Japanese prints, Japanese studies teaching faculty, and people with a serious interest in Japanese print culture. The second seminar on February 24 will be a hands-on workshop about how the types of print and book materials available have shaped the contents over time. The second session is targeted to those seeking advanced knowledge on Japanese prints and books. Both of these sessions will be conducted in Japanese.
