The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) came into existence in 2011. It is the successor to the Minerals Management Service and the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation, and Enforcement. Its mission is to manage the U.S.'s natural gas, oil, and other mineral resources on the Outer Continental Shelf and on federal and Indian lands. It also manages offshore leases for renewable energy.
