Mathematics: Graduate Student Library Orientation: Useful Library Services

This guide is a companion to the Graduate Student Library Orientation (GSLO) presentation, geared to teaching grad students the information literacy skills necessary to performing graduate-level research.

Services at the Library

Besides being a repository for research materials, the library also provides computing services, study rooms, research assistance, and more!

Computing Services at the Library

ComputersComputer

Both Hamilton and Sinclair have PCs available for students to use during normal business hours.  All machines have internet access, as well as Microsoft Office or an open-source office suite.

Printing

You can print from any library computer or wirelessly from your own computer.  Color printing is available in the Science and Technology (Sci/Tech) section of Hamilton Library.  Printing costs 11 cents per page in black and white, or 75 cents per page in color.  Print cards are required for printing from any library printer, and they can be purchased at either library.

Copying

Photocopy machines are available at both libraries.  Copies cost 10 cents per page, and the machines take print cards and cash.

Scanning

Flatbed scanners are available on the first floor of Hamilton Library in both the CLIC lab and the Sci/Tech computer lab.  Images can be saved to a thumb drive, emailed, or saved to an online service.

Spaces You Can Reserve

Group Study Rooms

These rooms are available on the 2nd floor of Hamilton Library and the Hamilton Addition for groups of two or more students, faculty, or staff.  They provide a quiet, cool environment for study sessions.  Each room has a chalkboard, a table, and chairs.  To review the rules and to make reservations, visit the library's Group Study Room page.

Presentation Practice Rooms

Two presentation practice rooms (equipped with computers, projectors, and whiteboards) are available for students to reserve.  The rooms are located in the Hamilton Addition near the Sci/Tech reference desk.  To view the rules and to make reservations, visit the library's Presentation Practice Room page.

Graduate Student Lockers

Classified graduate students can reserve lockers on the fourth floor of Hamilton Library.  (Lockers are also available in Keller Hall.  Please check with the math office.)  To find out more about reserving a library locker, please visit the Library Lockers page.Books

Graduate Student Research Carrels

A small number of research carrels are available on the upper floors of Hamilton lilbrary to graduate students working on their dissertations/theses.  The carrels are small enclosed spaces with a desk and chair.  To find out more about the carrels and the application process, visit the library's Research Carrel page.
