The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) was established as the Highway Traffic Safety Bureau in 1966 and became the NHTSA in 1970. It is primarily concerned with traffic safety issues such as speed limits, seat belt laws, and motor vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle safety.
The Government Documents collection includes many NHTSA publications about transportation safety. Its publications are not limited to highway travel. Motorcycle helmets, seat belts, child car seats, bicycling, pedestrians, impaired driving, teen driving, and many other safety issues are also covered. We also have many general publications, handbooks, manuals, and other material from NHTSA. In addition, we have many Congressional hearings and documents about traffic and vehicle safety. There are also a number of statistical reports on traffic safety.
