The Department of Justice (DOJ) was created in 1870. It is headed by the Attorney General (AG) of the United States, an office which has existed since 1789. The AG represents the United States in legal actions. The DOJ includes agencies responsible for investigating federal crimes, combating terrorism, managing federal prisons, and collecting statistics about crimes.
