The Latest Population Estimates contain the most up-to-date Hawaii population estimates. Data for July 1st of each year are available for total population; demographic components of change such as births, deaths, net migration; and characteristics such as age, sex, race (5 major race groups) and Hispanic origin. Housing unit data are also released annually. For Hawaii, total population estimates may be obtained for the state, 5 counties, 2 metropolitan areas, 2 micropolitan areas, and the Urban Honolulu CDP.

DBEDT has released an interactive web map of the latest American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year data series. The map includes selected characteristics of Hawaii’s population for the following geographies: census tracts, state Senate districts, state House districts, counties and the state.
Users can utilize the map to easily find information regarding total population, age demographics, and average household size, as well as other helpful statistics for each of the geographies mentioned above.
The U.S. Census Bureau released its 2015-2019 American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year estimates on December 10, 2020. The Census Bureau conducted interviews with 8.7% of Hawaii’s population between this 2015 to 2019 period. A total of 46,660 households in Hawaii were surveyed, an average of 9,320 households per year.
Highlights from the 2015-2019 American Community Survey 5-YEAR data for Hawaii:
Average household size. Seven census tracts in Hawaii, all located on Oahu, had an average household size of 5 or more persons. Kihei Mauka had the largest average household size on the island of Maui at 4.50. Puhi-Hanama’ulu had the largest average household size on Kauai at 3.84. Kealakehe had the largest average household size on the island of Hawaii at 3.58.
Median housing values for owner-occupied units. Diamond Head and Lanikai, both on Oahu, had median housing values of $2 million or more. Six other census tracts had median values between $1.3 and $1.99 million. For all counties, median housing values for owner-occupied housing units were greater than the national median of $217,500.
Median household income. Compared to 2010-2014, using 2019 inflation-adjusted dollars, the State and all counties had statistically significant increases in median household income. The median household income for the State of Hawaii increased by 10.3%. Kauai County’s median household income increased the most, 22.9%.
