Hawaiʻi - EA Hawaiian Activism Movements 1960-2010: Armed Forces

The mo'olelo (oral traditions) recounted in this book reveal how kua'âina have enabled Native Hawaiians to endure as a unique and dignified people after more than a century of American subjugation and control. The stories are set in rural communities or cultural kīpuka. By focusing in turn on an island (Molokaʻi), moku (the districts of Hana, Maui, and Puna, Hawai'i), and an ahupuaʻa (Waipʻio, Hawai'i), McGregor examines kuaʻāina life ways within distinct traditional land use regimes. Kaho'olawe is also included as a primary site where the regenerative force of the kuaʻāina from these cultural kīpuka have revived Hawaiian cultural practices.

This biography of George Helm and Kimo Mitchell is made up of a collection of poems, essays, moʻolelo and mele in tribute to the two aloha ʻāina whose lives were lost in pursuit of stopping the bombing of Kahoʻolawe and gaining access to the island for native Hawaiians.

Founding member Davianna Pōmaika‘i McGregor, talks about the creation of the PKO, its defeat of the US Navy, and the ongoing struggles that came with the clean up of Kahoʻolawe of unexploded ordinances and shrapnel. Beginning in the 1930s, the US Navy used the Hawaiian island of Kaho'olawe, a site sacred to native Hawaiians, as a target range. In the 1960s, the environmental degradation of the island became an important issue for environmentalists, politicians, and native Hawaiians. Blackford describes how native Hawaiian activists convinced other residents to embrace plans to set the island aside for cultural renewal rather than economic development. This MA thesis under the department of Pacific Island Studies intent is to analyze the nature of the Protect Kaho'olawa 'Ohana, using revitalization and contemporary social movement theories. Revitalization looks at movements as vehicles for rapid cultural change, as a Gestalt shift or "mazeway reformulation" to alleviate cultural stress. Contemporary social movement theory, on the other hand, deals with the organization of movements, with an emphasis on the dynamics of collective behavior. This was published before the Protect Kahoʻolawe ʻOhana gained access to Kahoʻolawe and the bombing stopped. Available online via ScholarSpace.

This MA thesis research analyzes 519 newspaper articles from two Hawaiian newspapers—The Honolulu Star Bulletin and The Honolulu Advertiser—over a seven-year period. Six framing devices—advocate, economic, environment, Hawaiian, military, and political—are devised and implemented. This analysis shows that media frames change over time, when a frame changes so does the tone of the article, and each level of article showed different frame usage. In colaboration with The American Friends Service Committee has prepared this paper that shows the cultural history of Mākua Valley. It includes information from the original [1977] report [Cultural history report of Mākua Military Reservation and vicinity] and events since 1977.

This MA thesis aims to contribute to scholarship on social movements, and the application of these concepts to Hawai'i's political history. Mākua Valley has been occupied by the military since World War II, and has been a widely contested area of land located on the west side of O'ahu, Hawai'i. Ruelas presents a case study of a long-term land struggle at Mākua Valley within the context of competing frames between the Army and the proponents of stewardship change. Through this paper, she examines the different stages of the struggle at Mākua over an eight-year period (between September 1998 and December 2006) through media content and personal narratives. Open burning and open detonation, hazardous and toxic waste, and fire control measures are examined. Sparky Rodrigues talks about his concerns with the evictions taking place, the contamination of Makua Valley, the condition of the valley at the end of the 65-year lease from the state of Hawaii, and the violence that is promoted by military activities in a sacred valley. Ecocolonization is the process by which indigenious people collaterally suffer the effects of the seizure and destruction of their natural resources by an outside political force, in this case, western settlement in Hawai`i. This dissertation looks at how Hawaiians speak of their own land and their relationship to it to explore the impact of ecocolonization in Wai`anae by employing indigenous epistemologies, specifically Hawaiian epistemologies. We look at the complete seizure of Mākua Valley and reflect upon the site as a symbol of how the Hawaiian family unit has been dismantled. Available online via ProQuest for UHM patrons.

Examines citizen activism in Hawaii through six case studies: the defense of Waikiki surf by a surfers' organization, Hawaiian nationalists' attempts to end the eviction of a rural community, efforts by environmentalists to stop a major runway project at the Honolulu International Airport, halting of a major highway project, and two examples of neighborhood struggles against unwanted development.

Ē luku wale ē is a lament, in words and images, for what has been lost in the wake of the construction of the massive H-3 freeway on the island of Oʻahu. Beginning in 1989, and working collectively as Piliāmoʻo, photographers Mark Hamasaki and Kapulani Landgraf captured a ravaged landscape after work crews had gone home. The photographs in Ē luku wale ē allow new generations to bear witness retrospectively to the changes in the land as they were taking place.

This is a small report put together by Stop H-3 Association of Hawaii which includes maps and images. This association also sued the project in which this report outlines the lawsuit as well.

Vernadette Vicuña Gonzalez shows how tourism and militarism have functioned together in Hawai`i and the Philippines, jointly empowering the United States to assert its geostrategic and economic interests in the Pacific. H-3 was for easier transportation of the military from Pearl Harbor to the base in Mōkapu. This MA thesis focuses on the three court cases and how they changed historic preservation laws in Hawaiʻi. One of the sites that is analyzed is the H-3 project and the lawsuits that came because of the controversy. Westcott also goes into detail of the historical context about the surrounding Moanalua valley and the activism involved.

This essay considers how the occupation and possession of Hawai‘i, depicted by Teresia Teaiwa as “militourism,” has deployed imaginaries of paradise. But it also suggests how Kānaka Maoli engaged in the sovereignty movement are mobilizing alternative notions of paradise in projects of repossession. This is explored through stories of three sites focal to our visit: Mauna a Wākea on the Big Island, Aulani Disney Resort and the University of Hawai‘i–West O‘ahu campus, and Hālawa Valley.
