2. Select the style you wish to edit and click Edit

3. Go to File → Save As and enter a unique title for the style (e.g.APA Edit 2009)*

4. Choose from the different options, for example:

Sort Order

Choose order

After making changes close the Output Style window and select Save when prompted

*You need to Save As so that you do not overwrite the original file

Edit Styles

Sometimes the citation styles in EndNote have settings that cause citations to display incorrectly. When this happens, you need to go into the style and make the changes that will fix these errors.

Note: The first two minutes of this video demonstrate journal names, which is also covered in the previous section of this guide. Skip to the 2:00 mark to see the tutorial on editing styles.

From The Experts

Here are two more common edits EndNote users find useful:

Citation Sort Order

If your in-text citations are displaying the author and date in the incorrect order, for instance (Smith, 2008) instead of (2008, Smith) you will need to change the settings for how your style displays your citations.  To make this change, from the Edit Style Menu choose Citations → Sort Order and select the correct option for your style.

Bibliography Title Capitalization

If the article or book titles have incorrect capitalization, for instance headline (most words are capitalized) instead of sentence capitalization (only the first word and proper nouns are capitalized) you will need to change the capitalization settings.  To fix this, in the Edit Style Menu, select Bibliography → Title Capitalization and choose the format that is required by your style.
