Getting the Most out of PubMed Medline: Displaying Search Results

Sort, Format, Number of Results, and Snippets

PubMed offers options to change the sorting order of the search results, the display format, and the number of results per page. Click on the Sorted by and Display options buttons located in the upper right corner of the search results page to see the different options.

  • Sorted by: Click on drop down menu to change how search results are sorted. The default sort option is Best Match. Other options are Most recent, Publication date, First author, and Journal.

  • Display options
    • Format: Expand the Format menu to select one of four options: Summary, Abstract, PubMed, and PMID.
    • Per Page: Expand the Per page menu to display 10, 20, 50, 100, or 200 search results on a page.
    • Show snippets: By default, the Summary format includes snippets from the article abstract.  Click on the Hide button to hide the snippets.
