Getting the Most out of PubMed Medline: Displaying Search Results

Sorting, Formatting, and Search Results per Page

PubMed offer options to change the display format, search results sorting, and number of results per page.

Legacy PubMed New PubMed

Sorting:

Expand the Sort by menu to change how search results are sorted.


Format: 

Expand the Format menu to choose Summary, Summary (text), Abstract, Abstract (text), MEDLINE, XML, or PMID List.


Per Page:

Expand the Per page menu to display 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, or 200 search results on a page.

Sorting:

Expand the Sort by menu to change how search results are sorted.


Format:

Toggle the Format between Summary or Abstract.


Per Page:

Expand the Per page menu to display 10, 20, 50, 100, or 200 search results on a page.

In this example, the user has selected "Publication Date" as the default sort option for their NCBI account. If no option is selected, PubMed assigns the default sort "Most Recent."

The default sort option is "Best Match." At the top of the search results page, click the gear button to expand Display Options, and select a sort option.
