The mission of the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is "to protect the health and value of American agriculture and natural resources." APHIS carries out its mission by operating programs to prevent the introduction of foreign pests in the U.S. and to promote the health of U.S. agriculture. APHIS was created in 1972 when the functions of several agencies within the U.S. Department of Agriculture were consolidated.
