Welcome to the Korea Collection of Hamilton Library at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Our collection acquires a wide variety of materials in support of Korean Studies, here at the University. Our collection includes materials in both 한글(Hangul/Korean) and English and covers topics in the Arts, Humanities, Business and Social Sciences fields.
We provide access to the Cheju Collection, Chungch’uwŏn Collection, Korean War Collection, North Korean Collection, and Special Collection, each consisting of valuable books and archival materials.
Please explore each collection by clicking on the tabs above.
As part of the Korea Collection Consortium of North America (KCCNA), the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa has developed its own Cheju Collection.
This collection contains approximately 1,700 volumes of materials related to or published in Cheju.
This collection is a valuable resource for studying traditional Korean society, including the Joseon dynasty and the colonial period. A total of 1,494 volumes have been digitized and are available for viewing in PDF format.
– UHM Library Digital Image Collections/IMAGES OF KOREAN WAR
The images in this collection were scanned photos donated to the Korea collection in 2023. Herbert Kobayashi, a Hawaiian Korean War veteran, donated a photo book of Manta Yoshi, a war correspondent. The 134 photos were taken by him while he was a war correspondent.
– Archives of the Turkish Brigade related to the Korean War
This archival collection, created by the Turkish Brigade that valiantly fought in the Korean War, is a part of the UH Library's Korean collections. The collection consists of a variety of rare materials, including unpublished and unrecorded magazines and booklets created by the soldiers themselves, a list of soldiers returning from the Brigade's initial deployment group, a photomontage portraying an anonymous soldier from the Brigade, and assorted photographs taken by Major Şükrü Doğan.
– Korean War Veterans Association Hawaii Chapter #1 Collection, now part of the Korean collections at the UH Library
We hold North Korean books in both Korean and English, along with children’s books, journals, films, and textbooks.
– Korean Old/Rare Books: The collection comprises 329 titles in 1,354 volumes, many of which hold great historical value. Among them are Buddhist texts, genealogical records, anthologies, and naesabon(內賜本)—royal inspection copies issued by the king.
– Marshall R. Pihl Collection : This collection was donated by Professor Marshall R. Pihl (1933–1995), who taught Korean literature. We hold 93 volumes in this collection, including works related to Korean studies as well as rare and historically significant materials.
