The UHM Library recently acquired a copy of Seijo CGS Working Paper Series No. 11, titled “Critically examining ‘World Uchinanchu’ discourse: identity consciousness among overseas Okinawan immigrants and their descendants.”

This is a paper based on a lecture by Prof. Wesley Ueunten of San Francisco State University in 2014. The Center for Glocal [sic] Studies at Seijo University sponsored the lecture. In his lecture, Prof. Ueunten takes up the World Uchinanchu Festival, in which he finds something missing—the oppression Okinawan people suffered, and the past and the present of political struggles.

The paper is mostly written in English. The presentation slides used during the lecture are included in the book.
